Profile
Since he was a boy, LUCKS has always had a keen eye for art and creativity.
He began drawing at a young age, honing his skills to replicate cartoon
imagery seen through mass media. After moving from New Zealand to Australia,
with his family, the energy of Hip Hop Culture grabbed hold and inspired his
obsession with mass media and popular culture. LUCKS began to notice and become increasingly more interested in Graffiti, which he fondly refers to as 'the sometimes disputed step-child of HIP HOP'.
His personal appreciation of this dynamic art form began in 1988 when he picked up his first spray can, and so began his life-long love of Graffiti and his close involvement with the Brisbane Graffiti scene. Over the past 18yrs LUCKS has seen Brisbane graffiti change and evolve, and with it his own artistic expression.
Through the exploration of stencils, posters and stickers, LUCKS has decontextualized his own experience of the materials and applications of the new street art phenomenon. In combination with his more traditional practise of graffiti writing, he has had the opportunity to create large scale canvases that draw on parallels of this particular subculture.
Expect to bump into him down the street, round the corner and back 13 kilometres.
